Balian healing

The Healing Tradition Behind the Stillness

Many meditation retreats weave in Balian healing, the island’s own tradition. Village healers, balian or dukun, use energy scanning to locate blockages, then may use massage, craniosacral-style touch or Reiki-style energy balancing.

Herbal remedies and holy water with mantras play a crucial role, and taksu, a divine healing energy, is central to it all. Healers are found by local referral, and payment is a donation of whatever feels appropriate.

Find your fit

Choosing a Meditation Retreat

Start with your goals, then check the details. Six things to settle first.

Meditation and healing work alongside licensed medical care, not instead of it. Serious conditions should be treated in hospitals in Denpasar or other major cities.

  1. 01

    Know your goal

Emotional healing, stress reduction, burnout recovery or self-discovery: let your aim shape the program you choose.

  2. 02

    Compare the program

Look for the mix you want: yoga, meditation, sound healing, healer encounters or cultural activities.

  3. 03

    Check the stay

Confirm accommodation quality and included activities directly with the provider before you book.

  4. 04

    Read reviews

Guest reviews and personal recommendations show how others experienced a centre. Research before you commit.

  5. 05

    Respect your limits

Some guests describe powerful emotional releases or intense physical sensations. Know your boundaries and health status first.

  6. 06

    Check permits

Retreat centres and tour operators must hold business licences and tourism permits regulated by Indonesian authorities.

In nature

Forest, River and Rice Paddy
